THE HONORARY TEXAN

Man, just a day after the passing of Bobby Keys, today Ian McLagan died. If you knew Keys, you likely know McLagan, He was the keyboard player for the Small Faces who, after singer/guitarist Steve Marriot's exit and Rod Stewart joining, became the Faces, the only British band that really gave the Stones a run for their money back in the early seventies. After the Faces split up, he did session and live dates with the Stones, along with others, Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, and Billy Bragg among them. He moved to Austin, Texas in 1994, and it became his adopted hometown where he was embraced as a local, and gigged frequently with his Bump Band.

Here's two Faces songs, the first, "Stay With Me", you should know like the back of your hand. That song would not be the same without his electric piano, The other is from the first Faces LP, with him on organ. On a lighter note, you may want to check the joke page on his web site, with gems like this one: "Kenny G walks into an elevator and says, “Man, this place is HAPPENING!”

I met him on my 60th birthday 2 years ago in Austin, TX and had him autograph both of my 70's era solo albums he recorded and his autobiography. Was planning to go back to Austin to see him when I heard the sad news.
