YOU AGAIN

Harvey Scales isn't a household name, not for most people anyway. He recorded for both Chess and Stax, had a song covered by the Sonics, and a song sampled by the Beastie Boys. Yet the name Harvey Scales might not register at all. Enter level two fiendom. You run into a name repeatedly and, at some point, you ask yourself, "Just who in the hell is this Harvey Scales?"

If I've got it right, he recorded first for a couple regional labels, then Chess, Stax, and Columbia. His stuff ranges from funky soul, to Northern Soul, to later stuff bordering on disco. (The type of good disco flavored stuff you have to consider before flat out declaring "Disco sucks.") I highly recommend the first two. Hell, listen to all of them and you'll get a feel for how adaptive he was. I guess he's just one of those guys (Willie Mitchell and Andre Williams also come to mind), who are relatively unknown to John Q. Public, but were consistently good, era be damned. Yes, get down.
