Have you ever seen the film The Girl Can't Help It? There's a scene in it with Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps doing "Be Bop A Lula," that is one of very few high quality clips of Vincent and his band in their prime. If you've seen it, you no doubt recognize the guy above, Paul Peek. He looks certifiable in the clip, like he's ready to blow a gasket. The rest of the band does some respectable rockin', he seems like he's absolutely possessed. (It might also be noted that it is one of the earliest documented cases of guitar face.) I knew nothing about him, but after reading that he played guitar, bass and pedal steel by the time he was twelve years old, I thought, "well shit, now I gotta hear him." I was only able to find one song, and it isn't rockabilly at all. Recorded in 1961, it's somewhat of an answer song to Ernie K-Doe's "Mother In Law," and being so, has a New Orleans sort of feel. That concludes the Paul Peek crazed looking guitarist portion of our show.
