MAINTAIN SPEED

I remember the first time I heard Rosco Gordon. It was the song "Just A Little Bit", on a VeeJay compilation. Do you know it? Then you likely know his delivery on that third line "I don't want it all-l-l". That's what hooked me. It's so relaxed, he practically sounds drunk. Slays me ever time. And that same delivery is all over his stuff. So the slaying has been pretty consistent over the years. Gordon was a rhythm and blues guy who recorded for a bunch of different labels, among them Chess and Sun, but he may be the only person who recorded Chess, Sun and Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. That little factoid grants him sainthood around here, and that don't come easy.

Diddy Wah just posted "Just A Little Bit" and it doesn't pop up that often, hence this lazy post. For a lot of good reading on Gordon, check out the thing at The Hound Blog. For some extrapolating on his rhythm and its influence on late fifties and early sixties Jamaican music, check out Boogie Woogie Flu post.
