SCREAMIN' JAY IN HIS CIVVIES

You may think that Halloween is just excuse to raid old posts over here. You might be on to something. But it's also an opportunity to recharge appreciation of someone you might not listen to much anymore. You may tire of Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put A Spell On You", and after hearing it a thousand times over the course of decades, I do. But raiding old posts for Halloween affords me the opportunity to revisit it, in all of it's nut case glory. Once a year whether I need it or not.

Hawkins was just an ordinary blues singer, and intended the song more as a ballad. But that was before the entire band got loaded before the recording session. Hawkins was so drunk he didn't even remember recording the song. He had to relearn it from the recording. The song became a hit and a persona was born. Hawkins's entire career may not have been had he not been trashed. Chug that. Here's the fruit of serendipity, and a few unrelated Halloween type jams by others. Go to town.
